Oh, Baby!

In case there’s anyone in America who hasn’t heard yet, we’re having a kid! The little munchkin is due in February, and we couldn’t be more thrilled.

We had our second routine prenatal appointment a couple of days ago, and everything continues to look fine. We heard the baby’s heartbeat again (”like a hummingbird,” John says), which was a thrill. Admittedly, it was not as much of a thrill as the big ultrasound we had a couple of weeks ago, when we watched the baby moving – dancing! – in utero for forty-five minutes. That was amazing.

The tiny swimming marvel is about the size of a lemon now. We’ve been tracking its size against familiar objects because it helps make baby more tangible and because, well, we’re both prone to metaphor. For the first few weeks we were actually keeping an embryo-sized (and later fetus-sized) object in a jar on the kitchen counter as a visual reminder. Our baby was a lentil for a while, then a pinto bean. Later, it was a raspberry. (Figures they’d all be food, doesn’t it?) Then we moved to a new home, and baby, probably a prune at that point, ended up in the trash. But we have some lemons in the kitchen this week, and, boy, does that kid look big already.

Jenny’s looking a little tubby around the middle, but we’re doubtful anyone would guess she’s pregnant yet. More likely they’d think she should lay off the pizza. And the fact that she’s eating every couple of hours from dawn till dusk only adds fuel to that fire. Surprisingly, though, that little lemon in her belly hasn’t tipped the bathroom scale much. Like many women, she lost a few pounds during the first trimester (plagued with daily nausea and food aversions) and has only recently started to crawl back toward her prelemon weight. We’re sure that’ll be changing rapidly – and soon.
